Cuitá, stone from the sky

Logline: In the backlands of Brazil, local youngsters from the town of Canudos participate in a casting test and reveal what they would like to tell in the film. From there, they act out episodes from the Canudos war and the saga of the Bendegó meteorite, found in the region and regarded as a ‘sacred stone’. Through the filmmaking that crosses their routines, they reflect on their past, their identity, and the possibilities of the present in their harsh reality.

Synopsis: The story of the Bendegó meteorite is told and staged by the boy LUCIANO (14), from its fall in the backlands of Bahia, where it was seen as a "sacred stone", to the fire at the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro, from which the meteorite survived intact. Though, when young people present themselves for a casting test, the memory of the War of Canudos appears as something insurmountable. PABLO (21) talks about the power relations from the historical battle and wishes to bring a power figure as an antagonist in the film. ANA (23), through the memory of her great-grandmother, a war veteran, dreams of reviewing history from above, as if in flight, and giving women their place of strength. NÍSIA (21), a trans woman, swims with her mermaid tail in the Cocorobó dam to escape her hard daily life, water that covered the second Canudos, re-erected after the war. LUCIANO becomes deeply involved with the narrative of the Bendegó meteorite and the mystique surrounding it - a stone from the heavens that made it rain in the sertão. The beliefs of the sacred stone find echoes in the imagination of the boy, who finds in cinema a space to play at being a stone, at being another. Through the making of the film that crosses their routines, the youngsters enact their fantasies and discuss about their past, their identity, and the possibilities of the present in the harsh reality of the backlands of Brazil.
